what is a suitable substitute for store bought chinchilla food?
I have a chinchilla and the closest store to buy actual chinchilla food is a pretty good drive. I was wondering if rabbit food (pellets) would be a good substitute since it is available locally.

No, rabbit food is not good enough for a chinchilla. Chinchillas must be fed a chinchilla-specific food, otherwise they will not be getting the appropriate nutrients they need to live a healthy life. Check online for food. http://www.petsmart.com and http://www.drsfostersmith.com are two places that I know of that carry chinchilla food. Some even offer free shipping deals from time to time (I think at Petsmart, it’s always free shipping when you spend over $50), so you can stock up on food and not pay a shipping charge.
Depends on where you are, I’m in New Zealand and there’s heaps of pet shops around here and you can even buy food online. Personally, I do not mix my food up – rabbits are rabbits and require different nutrients, proteins and minerals than that of the chinchilla. See if any do online ordering or buy a few extra supplies then it’s on-hand and not as many trips to buy your chin food.
No, rabbits and chinchillas have extremely different dietary requirements. Chinchillas digestive system is very delicate, and they must only be fed pellets specially made for chinchillas.
You could order your chins food online, or stock up once you get to the store. I know with guinea pigs food, if you put it in the freezer it stays fresh a lot longer(which is something you may want to look into).
chinchillas need a special diet, you can not give them rabbit food http://www.thechinbin.org
