What are some legitimate and trustworthy chinchilla rescue centers that I can reach from NY?

We just moved to a significantly smaller apartment and the chinchillas have a lot less space and with me leaving for college in a couple of weeks no one is really going to care for them anymore. =[; I really need a reliable chinchilla rescue center that I can trust to take care of my chinchillas before they are adopted.

I know both ferrets and chinchillas are expensive but a ferret can get really lonely so is it better to get a chinchilla if I only want one. I wanted a pet I can play with for ages and something that is quite lively. Which is better a Chinchilla or a ferret? And which one is more expensive to keep?

I have researched them quite abit and i like them alot, i love animals and chinchillas are just great, i love how they curl up and how soft they are, i plan on getting two as i recken they need a friend and a play mate! However leaflets and books only tell you so much i was wondering if a chinchilla owner could help me out. What are chinchillas like? Are they playful? Can they be aggresive? Are they easy to handle? Will they be frightened by my dog, rabbit or fish? Do they need alot of attention. I’m 15 so i’m mature enough and i don’t want a hyper gurbil i want a chinchilla.
Thanks you’ve all been so helpful, i understand about the ’some like being handles and some don’t thing’, i guess they’re a bit like humans, some are shy, when i go to the pets store, and see them, one of them usually goes up to me and sniffs the cage where i am, and i usually attempt to stroke it which i can see it enjoys yet the other usually hangs back at the back of the cage in his bed, still awake just sitting their. Wow have i stressed enough how awesome u guys have been i mean you’ve been so much help. thank you you all deserve a round of applause, this ‘best answer’ buisness is gonna be pretty darn tricky. How do I punish a chinchilla with a violent streak?

I have two chinchillas who are brothers and have always shared the same cage. They are currently 21 months old, and they have begun fighting regularly. Everything I am finding online suggests separating them until wounds have healed, and then reintroducing them to each other. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to do that? Plus, how do I punish the chinchilla who has become violent towards the other?

How does the color of a chinchilla affect their ability to mate?

I have two chinchillas– a white female, and a male mix of black and grey chinchilla, whose mom was grey, and dad was black. They’ve been together in the same cage for awhile, and i don’t think they’ve mated yet. Could their color combination be a factor in them not mating? Are white and black/grey chinchillas ok to mate?
