I'd say it's something to do with the fact that all night when you are asleep he is more-or less alone and when you wake up he has company. Then when you are up and about and moving around, he knows you are there and he doesnt feel lonely. I'll bet that if you go out of the house for a few hours, he purrs when he sees you are home !
