Is it safe to let my 3 year old cousin hold my new chinchilla?
My 3 year old cousin is one of the biggest animal lover’s I have ever seen. I am getting a chinchilla next week. I can’t wait to show it to him but is it safe to let him hold it? He is very gentle with animals so I am not worried about him hurting the chinchilla but I was wondering how the chinchilla will be with him?
I understand that the chinchilla is fragile but like I said, my cousin is very gentle. He held a one month old kitten and was very good with it.

Personally I would never let any small child handle a small animal no matter how good they are with animals or how gentle. There is always the chance that the child can drop the animal or squeeze too hard or the animal can panic and give the child a nasty bite (ferrets and chinchillas in particular). Maybe I would let the child look at it and pet it instead while holding it myself.
It’s best to let the chinchilla get to know YOU, before you let anyone outside of you’r household hold him
I wouldn’t allow until I knew the temperament of the chinchilla you bring home. If he/she seems calm and accepting of being held and your cousin is very gentle, I wouldn’t think there’d be a problem.
A chinchilla is very fragile (bones) and doesn’t like to be held. I wouldn’t recommend it.
