How does the color of a chinchilla affect their ability to mate?
I have two chinchillas– a white female, and a male mix of black and grey chinchilla, whose mom was grey, and dad was black. They’ve been together in the same cage for awhile, and i don’t think they’ve mated yet. Could their color combination be a factor in them not mating? Are white and black/grey chinchillas ok to mate?

Any chin can physically mate with any chin of the opposite sex.
There is no reason that the chins you describe should not be able to have babies, but the real question is , "should they be bred?"
Not all chins are compatible with other chins of the opposite sex, due to age, personality and herd stature.
on average 95% of all chins turn out to be sterile.
Color does not affect this ability to mate with chins of other colors. There are some colors that should NOT be mated together due to a semi lethel * and paritially dominate gene that reduces the number in the litter, and theoritically can affect the females ability to reproduce.
Some chin colors and strains are slower to breed/reproduce and some can carry other extreme genetic defects.
These are just some of the reasons that only quality, pedigreed chinchillas should be used for breeding.
